Use this guide to resolve issues you may be experiencing
as you attempt to connect with your Internet Service Provider (ISP)in a
Windows 95 operating system.
This Bulletin provides you with the steps necessary
to switch to Windows 95 Dial-Up Networking and to connect with your ISP.
Contact your ISP and ask the following questions. Write
down the answers, youšll need them to follow the steps suggested in this
Bulletin.
- What is the area code and phone number of your
ISP Host?
- What is the Domain?
- DNS Server Search Order?
- Do you use Dynamic Addressing?
- Are there any unique settings that you require?
At the end of each series of the following steps, you
may be prompted to insert your Windows 95 Installation disketes or CD-ROM.
You will need to have all of your Windows 95 disk(s).
Those of you who do not have the disk(s) available
may refer to the Special Note that appears at the end of this Bulletin.
Follow these steps to install Windows 95 dial up networking
on your computer.
- Click Start:Settings:Control Panel.
- Choose Add/Remove Programs.
- Select the Windows Setup tab, Components Window
will appear.
- Highlight Communications and click Details.
- Click Dial Up Networking and you will see a check
mark next to that item.
- Click OK:OK.
Follow these steps to assure that TCP/IP is installed.
These are the communications protocols established for internet activities.
Windows 95 may ask you to restart your computer during these steps. We suggest
that you answer NO to this option. We will prompt you in the section of
this Bulletin labeled, Dial-Up Icon Properties, to restart your system.
- Click Start:Settings:Control Panel.
- Double click Network.
- Click the Configuration tab.
- Check that the Network window includes the following:
- Client For Microsoft Networks
- Dial Up Adapter
- TCP/IP Dial Up Adapter
- If any of these items are missing then see the
sections below to install that missing element.
These are steps to install a Dial Up Adapter in your
Windows 95.
- Click Start:Settings:Control Panel.
- Double click Network.
- Click Client from the Select Network Component
Type window.
- Click Add and Select Network Client will open.
- Look for the Manufacturers Panel and select Client
For Microsoft Networks there.
- Click OK.
Here are the steps to install a Dial-Up Adapter to your
Windows 95.
- Click Start:Settings:Control Panel.
- Double click Network.
- Click Add and select Adapter from Select Network
Component Type window.
- Click Add; the Select Network Client window will
open.
- Select Microsoft and then Dial-Up Adapter.
- Click OK.
Here are steps to install TCP/IP internet protocols.
- Click Start:Settings:Control Panel.
- Double click Network.
- Click Add and select Protocol from the Select
Network Component Type window.
- Click Add and the Network Protocol Window will
open.
- Select Microsoft from the Manufacturers panel.
- Click TCP/IP and then OK.
Use these steps to configure the TCP/IP internet protocols
that you will need for most ISPs.
This Bulletin assumes that your ISP uses dynamic
addressing. That is to say, each time you connect to the internet a different
IP address is used at the server site.
If you suspect that your ISP is using a different
protocol than dynamic then contact them to confirm this.
- Click Start:Settings:Control Panel.
- Double click Network.
- Select TCP/IP Dial Up Adapter from the list of
installed network components.
- Click Properties.
- Click each tab listed on the left of the chart
below then check each aspect listed on the right.

Be sure that your Host, Domain and DNS Server Search Order
match those that you noted in the section of this Bulletin labeled
Before You Begin.

- Click OK, shutdown and restart your computer.
Follow these steps to set up a connection icon in Windows
95 for your ISP.
- Double click My Computer.
- Choose Dial-Up Networking.
- If this is the first time that you are using
Dial-Up, a Wizard will automatically start.
- If you have used Dial Up networking before
or the Wizard does not start then select MAKE A NEW CONNECTION icon
to start the Wizard.
- The wizard will ask for the name for your connection,
we suggest using the name of your ISP.
- The wizard will ask you to select the modem to
be used for internet connections. Click your model of 3Com Megahertz
PC Card.
- Click Next.
- Type the area code and phone number of your internet
service provideršs host. If you are uncertain of this then please go
to the section of this Bulletin labeled Before You Begin.
- Click Next:Finished.
Follow these steps to configure the Dial-Up Icon properties.
- Go to Dial-Up Networking and right click on your
new internet icon.
- Select Properties and click Server Type.
- Select the Point to Point Protocol (PPP): Windows
95 item from the drop down list in the Type Of Dial-Up Server panel.
- Look at each item listed on the left of the chart
below then check each aspect listed on the right.

- Click OK in the TCP/IP Settings and Server Types
window.
- Click Configure to open Modem Properties.
- Click the General tab and check that...
...MAXIMUM SPEED is 38400 if you have a 14.4
PC Card or 57600 if you have a 28.8 PC Card.
...ONLY CONNECT AT THIS SPEED is not selected.
- Click OK in Modem Properties and My connection.
- Shut down and restart Windows 95.
Follow these steps if you do not have Windows 95 disks
and your system is requesting that you insert those disk(s). These steps
are designed to help those of you who purchased systems with preinstalled
Windows 95.
- Click OK after your system asks for Windows 95
disk #2. The system will respond with the file it could not find. For
example, it may say COULD NOT FIND NETAPI.DLL.
- Click Start:Find:Files or Folders to find the
file that it needs.
- At Find: All Files window, type the filename,
for example NETAPI.DLL, and click Find Now.
- The system will now display the path of the file.
For example, it may say C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\NETAPI.DLL.
- Type the correct path that you just located in
the Set Up window where you were prompted to insert a Windows 95 disk.
- If your system asks for other Windows 95 disks
return to Step 1 of this section. If your system does not then you will
not need to refer to this section until you are prompted to insert Windows
95 disks again.
