| Answer: |
| USRobotics / 3Com Megahertz PC Card modems are not guaranteed to function properly outside of North America, although they should function fine in other countries with slight modifications.
First of all, you may want to check with Teleadapt (http://www.teleadapt.com) to see if the country you are travelling to uses standard RJ11 telephone jacks. If not, you will need to purchase an RJ11 adapter.
Next, the dialtone of the country you're travelling to may be a different frequency than the standard US dialtone. You may need to command your modem to ignore it. To do this, add X3 to the end of your initialization string. (Please contact your individual software vendors on how to do this in their separate software packages).
Finally, make sure you are using standard analog phone lines. Many hotels and businesses in countries all over the world use digital phone systems. These phone systems are incompatible with your modem, and may possibly damage it. Teleadapt also sells a line current tester to determine if the phone line you wish to plug into could possibly damage your modem. |
